Learn How to Starve a Tumor

Nov. 17, 2021 — Although the ancient advice to “feed your cold, starve your fever” is not supported by much evidence, new research shows that feeding fat and sugar to a cancerous tumor could help fuel its growth.
Research suggests that pancreatic tumors in mice are more likely to grow slowly if they eat a restricted diet. These results, published in Nature, don’t mean that everyone with cancer should eat a special diet. Further research in this area may uncover combinations of specific diets and drug treatments that can enhance cancer treatment.

Scientists know that cancer cells are hungry and consume a lot of glucose to grow. It is possible to stop their growth by starving them of glucose, but this would not harm the rest of the body. The researchers used mice with pancreatic cancer to find the answer. One group was fed a low-calorie diet, while another group was given a normal diet. The third group was fed a high-protein, high fat, low-carbohydrate ketogenic food.
Only tumors in animals on a low-calorie diet showed slower growth. This suggests that the tumors required more glucose to grow. Both calorie restriction as well as the keto diet had lower glucose levels, but lipids were also lower.
Cells, even cancer cells, depend on lipids for their outer membranes. The keto diet may have provided tumors with all the lipids they required to build new cell membranes.
These results show that starving tumors of glucose and lipids was the key to slowing the growth of cancer in these mice. This is not possible with a calorie-restricted diet. These nutrients are essential for healthy tissue, so patients with cancer should not change their diets without consulting a doctor. The findings suggest that a diet or drug to reduce lipid intake or their use by cells could be used to treat a tumor without actually starving the patient.
